The 1950s. When cars rocked and rolled

Back in the late 1950s, the roads were less crowded and safer but the cars were like something out of Wacky Races. There were no seat belts, ABS or power steering, handling was wayward, brakes were dodgy and crumple zones a mere twinkle in some budding engineer’s eye. So the nation breathed a collective sigh of relief when Swinton came along. From its very first branch in where else but, er, Salford, Swinton made buying car insurance easy.

Swinging into action

We really swung into action in the Swinging Sixties as word spread that, with Swinton, insurance could be quick and easy to buy. While, as mini skirts went up, with Swinton the cost of insurance went in the opposite direction. And very soon we also became the first insurance broker with an advert on national TV.

Focusing on you

The ‘me’ decade of the 1980s saw Swinton bucking trends again in focusing on making life easier for you our customers with computerized quotation systems and customer records. The internet also enabled us to expand our branch network right across the UK.

Noughy but nice

In May 2001, Swinton was bought by French insurer La Mutuelle Du Mans Assurance (MMA). Apart from strengthening our customer service offering, our French friends also naturally helped us design chic new uniforms and revamp branches with a more customer-friendly approach and stylish feel!

Personal lines broker of the year
