LIGHT

Light in or around your house doesn’t just mean your houselights. Here’s something we rarely ever do – look at the lights in your street. Make sure they’re all working.

TIP: Contact your council to report a problem with a street light.

Sidepaths, dark entrance ways, back gardens  all call for an external light to act as a deterrent to thieves.

ALARMS

House alarms can provide a deterrent to potential criminals. There are lots of good home alarm systems available these days depending on your budget. You can find a range of options online or at your local DIY store.

FENCING

Fences, walls and hedges are a good way to deter thieves and make it more difficult for them to access your property.  Try adding a bit of trellis on top of a fence – it gives height, visibility and it’s light which means it won’t support weight if someone climbs over it.

Check with your local planning authority about height restrictions before you carry out any work on your fences, walls and hedges

KEEP KEYS SECURE

Don’t help thieves out by leaving spare keys under mats or in letterboxes. Burglars will check these places.
