Tourer bike insurance customers and other leisure cyclists are contributing hundreds of millions of pounds to the UK economy each year.
According to the latest data from the Motor Cycle Industry Association (MCI), the motorcycle leisure and sport sectors turnover around £500 million a year.
This in turn adds £238 million in value to the UK economy, as well as tax contributions of just under £100 million.
The British MotoGP event alone saw motorcycle enthusiasts spend £16.6 million, while tourer bike insurance customers fund expedition guides and support teams, bike hire and freight, hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation.
MCI chief executive Steve Kenward says that the sector is going through a growth period, as many new riders have been inspired by the motorcycle touring series Long Way Down.
"The motorcycle sport and leisure sector involves riders and non-riders and there are plenty of opportunities for UK businesses to capitalise on the bike pound," he said.
As part of its drive to get people to ride to work, the MCI recently launched a new online tool which calculates the money commuters could save by taking the bike.
