Is the end nigh for speed cameras?

Tourer bike insurance customers will no doubt be relieved to hear that the reign of the speed camera may be about to end.

According to the Motorcycle News, public spending cuts have forced many councils to close their speed camera operations.

Oxfordshire's cameras will all be turned off by August 1st, the Thames Valley Safer Roads Partnership told the publication, while those in popular tourist destinations Devon and Cornwall will certainly follow suit.

Authorities in the south-west have already closed their speed camera offices and made 40 staff redundant following public funding cuts.

Road safety minister Mike Penning said that it was another sign that the "war on the motorist" waged by the previous Labour government was now over, but not all will see the move in this light.

The road safety charity Brake recently accused the government of putting lives at risk by cutting public funding for "vital" road safety initiatives.
