Motorcycle insurance customers are being warned that flash floods following the recent heatwave could make road conditions hazardous.
The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) said torrential rain means poor visibility, difficult control and slippery surfaces.
All road users are being advised by the organisation to take extra care when travelling over the next few days.
Peter Rodger, IAM chief examiner, said in cases of severe flooding, motorcycle insurance customers may wish to consider whether they should make the journey at all.
He added: "A suddenly very wet road surface increases the chances of slipping when braking or steering, which is a problem not just for motorists but cyclists and motorcyclists too."
The IAM reported in December 2008 that motorcyclists are being put at unnecessary risk of injury by crash barriers, urging authorities to consider biker safety when designing road features.
France has retro-fitted lower rails that prevent bikers from hitting support posts at the most vulnerable sites on its road network, the organisation highlighted.
