What is Replacement Van Cover?

Work comes to a standstill the moment your van does. That’s why, if you add Replacement Van cover to your van insurance policy, you’ll get a guaranteed replacement van if your van is stolen or in for repair.

Do I Need Replacement Van Cover?

If your van suffers an accident, fire, attempted theft, or malicious damage, Replacement Van insurance provides you with a replacement van for a hire period of 14 days.

Replacement Van cover is beneficial if you need to get back on the road following a road traffic accident or theft. This type of insurance is particularly useful if your van is critical to your work. We’ll provide a similar sized van based on engine capacity, so your business doesn’t suffer.

  • If a hire van cannot be provided, £40 per day may be payable at the insurer’s discretion for up to 14 days, or until the insured vehicle is repaired or your motor insurance claim is settled, whichever comes first

FAQs

The hire company will charge an excess if the hire van is returned damaged. They may also charge you for the cost of fuel if the hire van is returned without enough fuel. You will be responsible for paying any road traffic fines incurred whilst you are driving the hire van.

The Collision Damage Waiver included in the hire company’s agreement will not cover the first amount, also known as the excess, of any claim for damage caused to the hire vehicle.

You will be responsible for paying the excess. The level of excess will vary according to your age and driving history and will be notified to you by the hire company before you collect the vehicle.

Claiming on your Replacement Van policy does not directly affect your No Claims Bonus. However, if the incident that led to you being without a vehicle was your fault, then your main van insurance policy will reduce your No Claims Bonus accordingly.

Depending on the circumstances of the incident that left you without a van, your main insurance policy should provide you with a courtesy vehicle. The replacement vehicle will likely be a car, which may not be ideal for tradespeople, or those who rely on a van.

If your van is written off or stolen and not recovered, then the main insurance policy will not provide a courtesy car at all, as this cover is only designed to keep you mobile whilst your vehicle is in for repairs. Replacement Van cover will provide a similar sized van, regardless of the circumstances, for up to 14 days.

The following will not be covered under this policy:

  • Theft or attempted theft
  • Malicious damage and/or vandalism
  • Onward travel costs if a hire vehicle has been provided
  • Windscreen or glass damage
  • Mechanical or electrical breakdowns
  • Misfuelling
  • Replacement vehicle if your vehicle was not roadworthy, not covered by an MOT and/or not insured
  • Fuel, fines, fares, and tolls
  • Any excess owed to the hire company if the hire vehicle is damaged
  • Any additional insurance you take out for the hire vehicle
  • Collision damage waivers

  1. Claims must be reported as soon as possible from the date of the incident.
  2. You must have proof that you are claiming for the incident under your motor insurance policy.
  3. The period of hire will end on the final day of your hire period as specified in your policy schedule, or when your vehicle has been repaired or recovered.
  4. If your vehicle is beyond economical repair, the period of hire will end either on the final day of your hire period, or the date you receive a payment from your insurers – whichever is earliest.

With this cover in place, you would be entitled to a replacement vehicle if your van is:

  • Damaged in a road accident
  • Vandalised
  • Maliciously damaged
  • Involved in a fire
  • Stolen and not recovered

Replacement Van Insurance is provided within the United Kingdom which is Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man.

You must provide full and accurate information at all times. If you become aware that details provided are inaccurate or have changed, you must tell your insurer as soon as possible. Not updating your information may invalidate your policy, and claims may not be paid.

You will handle arrangements for the hire vehicle to be returned to the hire company and be responsible for any damage caused to the hire vehicle during the hire period.

You must make sure that the insured vehicle is serviced as per the manufacturer's instructions and covered by a valid motor insurance policy.

You and any other drivers must always follow the hire firm’s terms and conditions of hire during the hire period. Terms will be given to you before you accept the replacement vehicle.

You will need to provide us with as much information as possible, including: your name, address and policy number, the date, time, location and circumstances of the incident and confirmation of the claim you have made under your main motor insurance policy.

If your vehicle has been stolen or vandalised, you will need to report the incident to the police. We will ask you to provide us with the crime reference number.

Your cover will start and end on the dates given in your policy documents.

You can cancel this policy or choose not to renew by calling Swinton customer services on 0330 343 9195.

If you cancel within 14 days, you will be entitled to a full refund of any premium paid providing you have not made any claims.

If you cancel outside of the 14 days, we will refund the premium for the exact number of days left on your policy.
