Worthing community diamond wins £1000 charity donation

16th September 2017

A Worthing resident who regularly fundraises for a national charity working to protect children from Group B Streptococcus has been named a community diamond and received a £1,000 charity donation for Group Strep B Support.

High Street insurance broker Swinton Group launched a nationwide search as part of its diamond anniversary celebrations to find 10 'diamonds' who make a difference in their local communities.

Tania Holmes from Worthing has won the award for helping to raise the awareness of GBS (Group B Streptococcus), the UK’s most common cause of life-threatening infection in new-born babies. Tania’s son Blake sadly died from the infection 25 hours after being born.

Ever since, Tania has volunteered for Group B Strep Support, a national charity which works to raise awareness of the infection among pregnant women, providing information at fundraising events and calling for changes in the NHS.

Speaking at the cheque presentation, which took place at Swinton’s Brighton branch on Friday 15th September, Ms Holmes said: “The competition is a great way to celebrate the good work happening in local communities and the donation will make a huge difference to Group Strep B Support."

The £1,000 donation will go towards the charity’s work raising awareness of Group B Strep, and supporting families affected by GBS, like Tania.

Gary Beardwell, customer service manager at Swinton Group’s Brighton branch, said: “Tania’s commitment to Group B Strep Support and her determination to raise awareness and make a difference is truly inspiring.

“We designed our search for ‘Swinton Diamonds’ to celebrate local heroes like Tania. We hope this donation will help her continue the important work she is doing. Community spirit is incredibly important to us at Swinton, so this is our chance to give something back to those who go the extra mile.”

Jane Grout from Group B Strep Support said: “We are so grateful to Tania for her long-time support and incredible fundraising, and are delighted that Swinton has recognised her as a community diamond.”

Swinton Group is donating to community organisations and charities up and down the country throughout September as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.
