Volvo has been making cars since 1927. Here are a few things you may not know about Sweden’s best-known car manufacturer: 

  • Volvo invented the three-point seat belt – now standard on all cars – in 1959, but didn’t patent the design and lets other manufacturers use it for free in the interests of public safety
  • Volvo has announced the aim that by 2020 its cars will be so safe that no one will be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo
  • The car manufacturing division of the company was sold to Ford in 1999 and has been Chinese owned since 2010.

Volvo is currently working to develop a range of smaller, electrically powered cars which are planned to go into production by 2019.
