What is a No Claims Bonus?

The terms No Claim Discount and No Claims Bonus are often referred to have the same meaning, however there is a slight difference.

No Claims Bonus is the number of years you have earned without having claimed on your car insurance policy.

No Claims Discount is the amount of any discount given on your insurance premium as a result of the number of years No Claims Bonus you have, this will vary by insurer.

Where can I find proof of my no claims?

You can normally find your stated no claims years on your car insurance renewal notice, or you can also request it from your previous insurer. They will normally send you a letter or email stating the total number of No Claims Bonus years that you have.

As more insurers move to online you may have this provided by email, or find it in a secure online account. You can forward this on as a PDF or email. (The information contained in the documents must be clear and legible.)

What do I need to provide as proof?

In most instances you will find proof of your no claims bonus in the renewal notice you get from your previous insurer – just simply send it in to us and we will do the rest!

If you’re unsure, just follow the below information.

Where you will tend to find a copy of your no claims bonus.

  • Your latest renewal notice
  • A no claims bonus letter or email from your previous insurer
  • A Statement of Fact (sometimes this is found in your renewal notice, it just needs to show your policy number)
  • A cancellation letter from your last policy

What information it should show.

  • The number of no claims bonus years you have built up
  • Your name
  • Your last insurer
  • The date of issue (which needs to be in the last two years)

Do you accept No Claims Bonus earned on a company car, van or mobility scheme?

Yes, just send this in to us. Refer to ‘What do I need to provide as proof?’ for guidance if you are unsure what it needs to include.

What happens when I’ve sent my NCB proof?

If everything is in order, we’ll log your NCB on our systems and let you know. If there are any issues, we will either write to you or call you on the contact number you provided when you purchased your policy.

What happens if I don’t send it?

We want to make sure you continue to get the benefit of your no claims discount so it is important you send this in. We will send you a couple of reminders just in case you forget however if you don’t provide this to us we may cancel your policy. Do I need to send proof if I’ve been insured with Swinton before?

If you have been insured with us within the last two years and have not held insurance with any other company in this time then you will not need to send us a copy of your No Claims Bonus. Please make us aware if you have held a policy as we will need to check your previous information.

Can I get NCB from claim free years I’ve had using a company car?

Some insurers will offer a discount for company car NCB. This will be considered when we provide you with a quote.
